IMDB Said: Six friends are lured to an underground basement for a sinister experiment, will they escape, but most importantly will they live or die?
DVD Archive Said: Danny Dyer (Gary) is considered a class actor, with some great films in his wake, Danny Dyer has become quite a celebrity since his first appearance in Prime Suspect 3, at just 14 years of age. From here he was cast in various other television series and dramas, including Thief Takers and Soldier Soldier. It was when he got the roll as Moff in the indisputable drug-comedy human Traffic, that Danny Dyer made himself a household name across Europe.
So, what of the film “Basement”, well, not unlike any other film of its type – Cube, Saw, The Hole, and any other film that is set to cut the trapped off from escaping too early. From the onset, the character that Danny plays is a little sceptic, to say the least, as he goes to college and rallies against the British troops abroad. Introducing the rest of the group, of which consists of three women and two men. Derik (Jimi Mystry), Pru (Emily Beecham), Sarah (Kierston Wareing) and Saffron (Lois Winstone), all play their parts a little juddery, as one minute everyone is running for their lives, then the next it’s all “Stop. Let’s talk about unimportant things while the bad guys catch up with us.”
Completely laced with twists, turns, thrills and heart wrenching moments, it is without doubt one of the best films we’ve seen since Cube 3, or more realistically Session 9. Unfortunately, with the two mentioned afore, it would be unfair to rate the three together due to Basement being the only movie that has two well-known actor’s familiar to even the non-cinema goer.
Basement is far from being classed as a “Sunday Movie”, although it has been suggested by a couple of our Team that Danny’s character could have been much stronger and more convincing. In all honesty, Basement would be classed under “Friday Night Live”. Home delivery of a greasy Kebab, pack of beers and a likely candidate to start screaming and you’ve got yourself some great entertainment for the evening.
DVD Archive Rating: 7/10 [8/10 if Danny Dyer was more stronger]
