DVD Archive Review:

OK, firstly, M. Night Shyamalan, is a great writer of horror/thriller.  He has proved this in the past with films such as The Sixth Sense, The Unbreakable and Signs, to name just a few.  But, with his new film “Devil”, we thought that the title would curl our toes with shock, make us wince with the horror and undoubtedly have our heads spin with the twist – Yes, there is a twist to all Mr. Shyamalan films.

We felt great relief that we didn’t go to the cinema to watch this movie – though this does not mean that the film is bad or be it a ‘Yawner’, because it’s not.

Devil set’s out its story introducing the main character’s who will, eventually, become the feasting’s of the Devil.  As well as this to look forward to, we have a sobering Detective who is in the wrong place at the wrong time – or is he?  Then there’s the security guards of an office building who have a connection to the whole thing, too, which makes for a great combo of “Will they, won’t they” and “Who done it?”

With many twists and turns, Devil puts the viewer into a placement where they believe they know, but then proceeds to knock the idea’s and theories straight from your mind.  With only five people in an elevator, two monitor watching security guards, a maintenance guy and a police detective to carry this film along, what is there left to keep you guessing about why the title was called “Devil”.

It can only be said that this film lacked something…other than a reset of a PG-13 certificate!  Surely, by showing the gore and horror from an up close and personal perspective, the movie would have had us jumping back in shock.  Yes, there is blood, but no more than you would expect to find on Holby City or Casualty.  If there is an uncut version of this film out there [which we hope there is], then we believe that it should contain more than just an ounce of plasma dripping across the elevator floor.

DVD Rating:  6/10 [7/10 if they would have kept the elevator music playing and added more gore]
