Avatar -Extended- 2009

What IMDB Say About This Film:

In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na’vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture. Written by Giorgio C.  When his brother is killed in a robbery, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge’s intentions of driving off the native humanoid “Na’vi” in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na’vi people with the use of an “avatar” identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand – and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora.

What DVD Archive Say About This Film:

Yes, it is set in the future, where aliens have become second class citizens and deserve nothing more than a Butt Kicking to move out of an area where huge profit can be made from a rare Ore.  On his arrival on Pandora, Jake Sully, a disabled Marine teams up with Sigourney Weaver and her crew of scientists to find a weak point in the natives of the planet – The Na’Vi.

Fantastic CG is brought together in this applaudible Sci-Fi Fantasy Adventure movie; the helicopters alone will alert some, if not all fans of The Halo Console games to the similarities.  The ground clearing vehicles take in a familiar concept of the late Star Wars Sand People salvage collectors, and the iron-clad Troop Walkers, too, will no doubt having those who have watched both “Aliens” and “Robot-Jocks” gasping out various names and notes.

Altogether, we at The DVD Archive felt that the film has a lot of promise – as has been duly noted with Box Office Takings – but, for those Sci-Fi fans that have already had these concepts put before them in Cinema or DVD format, it is highly unlikely that they are going to praise a totally new concept of its construction.  We watched the entire film – the extended version and also the 3D version – and found that the acting was strong, the cast solid, incidental music correctly placed and the ending a notch above what was expected.  Unfortunately, by the end of the film, we could not find any reason whatsoever why there could possibly be a sequel!  A classic in the making, but for us, once would be enough.

DVD Archive Rating: 7/10 – 8/10 for Sigourney Weavers A Class acting
